Geography of the Panchayat
Geography of Ponmundam Grama Panchayat
Ponmundam Grama Panchayat, which comes under the jurisdiction of Tanur Block Panchayat in Malappuram district, is a rural area where natural beauty and agricultural importance coexist. Covering an area of approximately 9.16 square kilometres, the Panchayat is notable for its diverse topography and abundant natural resources. The presence of hills, rocky outcrops, plains, and paddy fields adds to the geographical uniqueness of the region.
Geographical Location and Boundaries
The four sides of Ponmundam Grama Panchayat are predominantly surrounded by hilly terrain. This gives the Panchayat a natural geographical barrier as well as a beautiful landscape. Cheriyamundam, Othoor, Tanur, and Perumanna Klari are the neighbouring Grama Panchayats sharing boundaries with Ponmundam. The social, economic, and agricultural relationships with these Panchayats play an important role in the development of the region.
Topography and Landforms
The topography of Ponmundam consists of a combination of hills, rocky areas, paddy fields, and plains. Flat areas suitable for agriculture and low-lying areas that help in water retention can be found here. This diversity in terrain provides favourable conditions for the development of agriculture and biodiversity.
Major Hills and Elevated Areas
The major elevated areas in the Panchayat include Banglamkunnu, Mannaramkunnu, Thavalamkunnu, Ayyaya, and Chenammal Kunnu. These hills enhance the natural beauty of the region and also contribute to groundwater conservation, rainwater harvesting, and the maintenance of ecological balance. They are also natural features that influence the local climate.
Soil Characteristics
Ponmundam Grama Panchayat is located in the midland region of Kerala. The major soil type suitable for the topography and agricultural potential of the region is Laterite Soil, also known as red soil. Formed as a result of prolonged weathering processes under tropical climatic conditions, this soil generally has a reddish-brown colour due to its relatively high content of iron and aluminium.
In the low-lying plains and paddy fields of the Panchayat, soils with an alluvial nature and higher organic content can also be found. These areas are highly suitable for paddy cultivation. Meanwhile, laterite soil is predominantly found in the hilly areas and slopes. This soil is suitable for long-term and short-term crops such as coconut, arecanut, banana, cashew, pepper, and various fruit trees. With adequate irrigation and proper management of organic nutrients, good agricultural productivity can be achieved in this soil.
Transportation Facilities
The Tirur–Manjeri State Highway passes through Ponmundam Grama Panchayat, providing convenient transportation connectivity with the surrounding areas. The Panchayat is approximately 7 kilometres from National Highway 17 (currently National Highway 66) and about 6 kilometres from Tirur Railway Station, the major railway station in the area. These transportation facilities are beneficial for the marketing of agricultural products as well as for the daily travel needs of the people.
Water Resources
Although Ponmundam Grama Panchayat has neither a coastline nor any major rivers, the region is relatively rich in terms of water availability. Wells, ponds, and small streams are the major sources of freshwater. These water resources are utilised to meet drinking water requirements as well as agricultural needs. Dependence on groundwater is one of the major characteristics of the Panchayat's water availability.
Agricultural Importance
The plains, fertile soil, and available water resources make Ponmundam highly suitable for the agricultural sector. The extensive paddy fields reflect the agricultural heritage of the Panchayat.
